Indigenous Apostolate (Mapuches)
The goal of this apostolate is to accompany the indigenous (Mapuches) within their own culture and thus create a working environment that respects their customs and values. Our starting point is learning the language of the indigenous people so that we can understand their ethnicity.
Since 1986 the Missionaries of the Divine Word have been working in a Parish in the South of Chile (Puerto Dominguez), which is one of the main centres for this apostolate. Since then the apostolate has expanded in the South of Chile (Quepe) to include another parish with the same ethnic group-type.
This apostolate is also active in Santiago (Chile’s Capital City), where those who are involved in this ministry can avail of the pastoral centre and offices, which are provided to meet the urban needs of the indigenous people in Santiago.
