Divine Word Missionaries

English Version

Brief History
The Society of the Divine Word, or more commonly referred to as the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD), is an international religious community of Catholic Missionary Priests and Brothers founded in 1875 and exist in over 55 countries around the globe. The Society firsts arrived in Chile in the year 1900 focusing on education as one of the key pastoral priorities in Chile at that time. The emphasis on education gradually shifted opening the door to a variety of different apostolates and specialised ministries. Today the Divine Word Missionaries have an international presence in Chile composed of 13 different nationalities, eight of whom serve in continents like Africa, Asia, Oceania and Europe. The Society’s international dimension is in itself a sign of the Kingdom of God, the beginning of the life yet to come.

Urged by the Spirit of Mission for the life of the world, the SVDs engage in a large variety of pastoral works, responding to the changing needs of the Church, walking in solidarity with the poor and marginalized, caring for the earth threatened by human greed and depredation, proclaiming the Gospel boldly and giving witness to the God of life through community living and the breaking of eucharistic bread.
